Milner Ecology Ltd undertook an extended Phase 1 Habitat survey of a proposed woodland burial site on the outskirts of Wokingham. The site was located within a large area of woodland designated as a Wildlife Heritage Site.
Several badger setts and a population of adders were identified along with areas of high botanical importance. Large areas of the site had however become degraded due to dense stands of rhododendron.
Solutions included the retention of native woodland, the sympathetic positioning of the development footprint in areas of low ecological value, removal of invasive rhododendron and reinstatement of appropriate woodland management (rotational coppicing with standards) which stimulated germination of the wildflower seed bank.
